They did a terrible thing. They've returned to make it right. The price will be high.
Chaos is sweeping the islands of Wefrivain--slave revolts, attacks on temples, and questions about the true nature of the wyvern gods. The catalyst is a single book called The Guild of the Cowry Catchers. The authors are a band of pirates.
Gerard and his friends are not content to merely spread unrest. They're determined to free the fauns of Maijha Minor, who are scheduled to be sold or slaughtered. This is a situation that Gerard, Silveo, and Gwain created, and they want to make it right.
However, things are not as they seem on the deadly island game park. Priestess Morchella is pulling strings, and the fauns may want their own brand of revenge. Gerard lost everything last time he stepped onto Maijha Minor. If he's not careful, the same could happen again.
Shores Beyond the World is the fifth and final book in the Guild of the Cowry Catchers series. Paper books in this series are not illustrated. However, the art is available in a hardback called The Art of Cowry Catchers.

I first discovered The Guild of the Cowry Catchers as a podcast, but I've taken to reading it because it works well in print and because, for now, the end of the story is only available as an ebook. Warning! Do NOT read book 5 until you have read or listened too books 1-4. The entire Guild of the Cowry Catchers, books 1-5 is available as a single ebook without illustrations or as 5 illustrated books or ebooks.Shores continues the adventures of Gerard, Silveo, Gwain, and their associates as they seek freedom from the tyranny of the wyverns. In Shores, we see how characters choices have changed them, or not, and the consequences of those choices, which makes for a dramatic and moving story. Unfortunantly, we don't get to see how things work out for the majority of the inhabitants of Wefrivain. I don't want to spoil anything, but when I finished reading book 5 I very much wanted to read book 6. Although no book 6 is planned, the author says there will be a shorter story/epilogue in the future. I'll be buying that as soon as it is available.
Though I enjoyed the story, two factors prevent me from giving this that 5th star. First, I think the book would read better and the story would be stronger if some of the "adult" scenes were shorter and/or less explicit. Some portion was necessary for the story the author is telling, but on occasion, some of it felt gratuitous. Second, the climactic battle scene was powerful, moving, fantastical, and terrible. It was, in a word, great! And then it undid a large measure of what made it great (I am trying to avoid spoiling.) with a footprint. In a story that goes out of its way to be adult fantasy, that footprint felt very YA.
Shores is an exciting tale. Those who have been following the story so far will enjoy this book.

The Guild of the Cowry Catchers Book 5 Shores Beyond the World Abigail Hilton 9781482516760 Books Reviews
You really need to start from book 1 to understand. The stories were entertaining, exciting, it twists and turns you in directions you never thought... definitely worth the read. I hope the author continues there is room for so much more.... I LOVE IT
Ms. Hilton has created a compelling world that is interesting and engaging. Her characters are developed and each has a unique personality. The love story between Silveo and Gerard is strong and draws you in making you care deeply for them. The sudden twist right before the end brings tears to your eyes. You feel the pain. It's a great fantasy novel that I couldn't put down. Highly recommend this series.
l realy got involved in the world created . The sea swashbuckling story is exciting and its characters interactions are indeering. The fantasy aspect is out there and wonderful.
WOW! This 5th book is so awesome! Job well done to Abigail Hilton.
My husband and I read this book. We agree that the culmination of what we waited for was terrific, but the means thereof left a little to be desired. After seeing the characters grow and become complex throughout the five books, the ending was surprisingly predictable and involved a deus ex machina that weakened a tragic moment just a chapter before.
POSSIBLE SPOILER !!!!!
Didn't we all want to see Gerard drop a mortar block on Morchella's head in just the right spot as we saw in earlier chapters? He became more of a witness than a participant and it weakened his arc.
I read a lot. And I listen to a lot of audiobooks and speculative fiction podcasts while I run (a lot). But I still have a terrible tendency to buy new books faster than I read them. As a result, I have a long backlog of ebooks on my iPad, a backlog of half a dozen Audible audiobooks on my iPod and phone, and a podcatcher app full of with a few months of speculative fiction podcasts to catch up on.
So it is rare that I would reread something or, as I did with the entire Guild of the Cowry Catchers series, read the book and then listen again to the audiobook. That is the best endorsement I can provide.
Oh man. I love this series, and this book is the perfect conclusion. If you've read anything else by Abigail Hilton, you really need to read this book.
The relationship between Silveo and Gerard has been well established before this point, but Gerard has begun to take more initiative and accept that his mate is a boy. Just when it seems that they are happy and everything, the world around them begins to crumble and they have to confront past deeds and do their best to topple the wyvern-ruled structure that is Wefrivain.
This is a stunning conclusion to a wonderful series. I absolutely wish there were more, but I guess I will have to be satisfied with the ending! There is a bonus chapter on the author's site (cowrycatchers.com) which is actually more satisfying than the ending in the book. I loved this series. It was a quick read, and the first four books are available as full-cast audio. Having listened to those first (rather than read the ebooks) I could "hear" the characters' voices as I read the story, which I think made it all the better.
Note These books are for mature audiences only, and those must be cool with decently graphic sex scenes between members of the same sex.
